Instrument: Two 5-Octave Marimbas
Push and Pull (2024) is a marimba duo scored for two 5-octave marimbas and was the winner of the 2024 Great Plains International Marimba Composition Competition. The piece ‘pushes and pulls’ harmonically between two alternating keys, rhythmically through its interlocking figures, and melodically between the two players, as the role of melody and accompaniment are traded back and forth. Thus, the desired effect of the music is an ebb and flow-like experience for both the listener and the players alike.
Push and Pull is my first duet for two 5-octave marimbas, originally written for me and Judy Hu to perform on her last recital at Juilliard. The main theme comes from an unpublished work of mine, scored for piano trio, and it is an advanced piece suitable for any college-level recital.
